Numerous establishments around Rush Street campaigned for him and he won the election in a landslide. Mayor Jane Byrne acknowledged his victory by declaring that Harry was the Mayor of Rush Street and that she was the Mayor of the rest of Chicago. The original idea of the Easter Bunny, or Osterhase in German (literally Easter Hare), was in fact a very German creation dating back to the Middle Ages. By the 17th century, the Easter Bunny would bring eggs for children to discover on Easter. And the creature bringing treats wasn’t always a hare: there was also an Easter Fox, Stork and Crane in various regions before the hare became mainstream. But why a bunny? A big reason for this is that given their reputation for frequent reproduction, bunnies represent fertility and new life, just like eggs do, which are big themes of springtime and the Christian belief in Jesus' resurrection.

SPRING IS BACK AND SO AM I!

Spring. As in years past, Chuck and I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity to get to a warmer clime for a winter vacation. Palm Beach has become one of our top spots in Florida but, truth be told, we would take any part of this great state. We love everything about it. When you first arrive in town, there is nothing like seeing this sign:

from Bal Harbor, I screeched to a halt when I saw the Sahara Resort with its tacky camel tableau still out front. The building is a tad run-down but the three camels and their drivers looked like they had been freshly painted. Someone has been taking great pride in this roadside attraction for well over 60 years and it made me smile from ear to ear.

After more than a two-year hiatus from hosting public events, 900 North Michigan Shops closed Women’s History Month with a luxe kickoff party to inaugurate Fleurs de Villes FEMMES - a five-day, immersive experience that essentially transformed 900 Shops into equal parts art gallery and floral boutique. Some 275 guests attended the after-hours affair to celebrate the opening of the stunning exhibit featuring more than a dozen mannequins dressed in custom gowns made of thousands of fresh flowers. Each mannequin honored one of the following luminaries: Betty White, Michelle Obama , Frida Kahlo, Malala Yousafzai, Maria Tallchief, Audrey Hepburn, Oprah Winfrey, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Rita Moreno, Diana Ross, Empress Xiaozhuangwen, Bertha Palmer and Queen Anne. Florists competed for the following categories: Florist Favorite (Bloome, for Oprah Winfrey);  Most Realistic (Flowerchild, for Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis); Most Creative (Ki iHouse, for Bertha Palmer); Best in Show (Hedonia, for Empress Xiaozhuangwen). The judges panel was made up of, Courtney Hopkins, former president, The Costume Council; Patience Pickner, floral designer, Kennicott Brothers; Cortney Hall, co-host of Chicago Today and Rosie Clayton, social media influencer. Guests were treated to an array of hors d'oeuvres from Aster Hall, and cocktails courtesy of the exhibit’s liquor sponsor, Hendrick’s Gin. In addition to the exhibit, guests were also the first to experience the garden setting of Le Jardin, where floral workshops took place throughout the run of the show, with décor provided by Kehoe Designs. The Costume Council provided photography and support for the installations honoring Maria Tallchief and Bertha Palmer.

One Tail at a Time brought back its Houndstooth Ball after hosting virtual galas during the pandemic. The 13th Houndstooth Ball welcomed nearly 600 of Chicago’s animal philanthropists, rescuers and their furry friends for a fundraiser on March 12 at the Morgan Manufacturing building. The gala was held virtually the past two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic. All proceeds benefit the rescue, rehabilitation and adoption of dogs,

cats and rabbits in need. It will also support One Tail at a Time adopters and community outreach efforts, including its work to provide humane education and assistance for disadvantaged and low-income families. Attendees enjoyed a vegan dinner from Liberation Donuts while their dogs received their own special meals. The event is always a sellout and this year brought out supporters in force. A silent auction offered over 100 packages including a photo session with Becky Brown Photography, a custom tattoo of your dog and a rescue ride-along with Executive Director Heather Owen. VIP ticket holders enjoyed an extra hour of cocktails with vegan appetizers and a VIP bag full of goodies. The event was emceed by Fred of 103.5 KISS FM.

RIP dear Ken Price.

A longtime fixture in the Chicago community has passed. Ken Price, who spent decades as the public relations director for the Palmer House left us at age 82 after a long bout with cancer. His memorial in the Empire Room of the Palmer House was standing room only. He was beautifully eulogized by Dean Lane

Huge congrats to Ingalls Development Foundation on its recent "Promise of Hope" fashion show/fundraiser held at the Odyssey in Tinley Park. I love seeing events cautiously return and was so happy to hug my friends again, even though this new variant is taking us back a step. Crime is off the charts with no end in sight but, I'm still hopeful this city will survive and thrive. I'm thrilled to see so many new restaurants opening up. Alex Dana just opened his 9th restaurant, this time in Millennium Park, and Gibsons Restaurant Group has partnered with Michelin starred Chef Jose Andres in some exciting new ventures which will keep our city on top of the foodie chain. On a sad note, we lost a 40-year institution, Yoshi's Cafe, in Lakeview. But, despite some

setbacks, this holiday season has never been brighter, literally speaking. Rosemont debuted its AMAZE Light Festival this year with over 1 million lights in Impact Field. Six Flags' Holiday in the Park returned this year with both in-person and drive-thru options and, again, millions of lights. Navy Pier hosted Light Up the Lake inside Festival Hall and the

AMAZE--an AMAZING debut experience at Rosemont.

Botanic Garden's Lightscapes was a sell-out. Brookfield Zoo's Holiday Magic, at 40 years young, was the area's longest-running lights event. Lincoln Park Zoo's Zoolights is expected to bring in nearly $2.5 million this year for its bottom line and Morton Arboretum's Illumination surpassed 200,000 visitors this year. Yes, the city has never shined brighter, hopefully it will be a harbinger of good things to come for us next year. Shine on Chi! We're all rooting for YOU!

ULBGC recently announced it will open seven new school-based Club sites thanks to a five-year, $1.4 million annual grant from the national Nita M. Throughout the years Bates has dressed many celebs including Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Harvey, Bernie Mac, Whitney Houston and so many more!  Self taught designer Barbara has also been known for her fight against breast cancer and has raised over $500,000 for Mt. Sinai hospital in support of breast cancer patients. And, for over a decade, she has provided free prom gowns for Chicago's in-need high school seniors and most recently provided thousands of masks during Covid for Chicago's police officers. Congrats, with love Barbara!

Navy Pier's Light Up the Lake, now through Jan. 2.

At Navy Pier's "Light Up the Lake" debut attraction, now through January 2, a magical wonderland awaits, all enclosed within the warm, inviting Festival Hall. First off, being enclosed is a big plus for families with kids who want to keep them comfortable and warm during our cold winters. Another plus is the carpeting, very thoughtful for one and all AND it provides traction for the kiddos as they dart around the sparkling exhibits--lighted ornaments, ginormous teddy bears, Christmas boxes, tunnels of lights, a 3-story Christmas tree and more. It was so heartwarming to see so many families out enjoying themselves after a long period of isolation. Couples walking hand in hand and taking photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Children squealing with delight on the mini-train tooling around Christmas cottages. Adults sipping spiked hot chocolate and enjoying a variety of delicious foods--funnel cakes, loaded latkes, smoked brisket sandwiches, cotton candy, funnel cake sundaes, beer, tequila cocktails, pastrami-spiced turkey sandwiches and so much more. There's even a cookie decorating kit for the kids!  As we wandered throughout the 170,000-square-foot space, we felt the spirit of Christmas that is alive and well here. We sat for a while by the ice-skating rink watching as skaters, with varying levels of talent, swooped around to the sounds of the holidays. Beyond the rink, picnic tables were set up for dining with large fireplaces projected on screens above the tables. Happy 150th Palmer House!

The historic Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel, celebrated its 150^th anniversary December 8. A ceremony and celebration took place in the hotel's grand lobby before a crowd of fans, friends and media. The event honored both the milestone anniversary and National Brownie Day (paying homage to the original brownie recipe that was invented at the hotel). The lobby came alive with digital projections of historic photos along the walls, a gallery of never-before-seen historic artifacts and a proclamation from the Mayor Lori Lightfoot declaring today to be "Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel Day in Chicago, in celebration of 150 years of history, elegance and hospitality." The State of Illinois also issued a proclamation honoring the hotel. The Palmer House first opened on September 26, 1871. The hotel began as an extravagant wedding gift from Potter Palmer to his bride Bertha Honore and was immediately regarded as one of the most luxurious hotels in Chicago. The crowd of nearly 200 arrived off the elevators carrying basketballs, coloring books and an assortment of toys, all to benefit Kids Above All, a nonprofit which has been caring for children in need since 1894. The Holiday Luncheon supports the valuable work of The Service Club of Chicago and allows its programs to grow and expand. This year’s event raised over $60,000 -- another record high set for the year.

Dreams for Kids continued its 33rd year of giving on December 15 when community leaders met at GCE Lab School to carry on the tradition of hosting its annual toy and comfort drive, Holiday for Hope, benefiting Chicago families in need, which was in jeopardy of being discontinued amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, over 1200 toys, coats, gloves, and

In July, GCE Lab School took on Dreams for Kids’ Holiday for Hope drive and social entrepreneurship program, Dream Leaders, a youth leadership and service-learning program.

The Union League Holiday Fashion Show took place on December 1, expertly produced again by ZZAZZ Productions (Tracey Tarantino & Team--Nancy Long, fashion coordinator; Natalie Roppo, production coordinator) who have been a part of this event for years.

The show took place in the club's elegant Grand Ballroom where 200 guests enjoyed lunch, specialty vendors (on a different floor) and one of the most beautiful backdrops I've ever seen for an event, a snow-filled, wintry scene that made the fashion segments by Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue, Max Mara at Bloomingdale's, Anne Fontaine, York Furrier, St. John Boutique, Contessa Bottega and Mira Couture pop right off the stage. Fabulous runway fashions were presented by Neiman Marcus Oak Brook, York Furrier, Mira Couture, Max Mara, Sandro, Red E Mas, Lepa Boutique, St. John, Elda de la Rosa and Ted Baker. Since 1911, The Infant Welfare Society has been providing love and support for children and their families in under-served communities. The Angel Harvey Family Health Center of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago provides a variety of services including prenatal care, dental, adult health, optometry, counseling services as well as The Child-Centered Health & Advanced Therapies (CHAT) program.

Another happy wedding occurred on November 14 in Chicago when former Chicago Bear star and full-time philanthropist Israel Idonije wed his love, Jatnna Toribio. It was an intimate ceremony with a small group of friends that culminated in a dramatic photo shoot atop the LondonHouse by Gregoire Jules. Again, love WINS!!!

And it was a fabulous, surprise engagement for Alex Antoniou and her love Matt Silkaitas! He got down on one knee atop the Ever Restaurant on December 18 and popped the question. The whole family celebrated together afterwards.

Holiday parties were NOT put on hold again this year, thank goodness! Paul Iacono celebrated with his friends at the Underground Cocktail Lounge. Another party of note was the intimate soiree thrown by award-winning WBBM Newsradio host, Lisa Fielding. Her charming home, complete with a panoramic balcony that overlooked the skyline, was decorated to the hilt--every nook and cranny held something festive. Her fabulous vintage jukebox played every Christmas song and, as the evening wore on, I'm told karaoke reigned supreme. She is the ultimate host and we were grateful to be included.

A holiday party amid the palms was thrown by the fabulous Leslie Hindman at her beautiful new home in Palm Beach. Friends traveled from near and far to join her to celebrate both her birthday AND the season. One night, guests enjoyed dinner at the oh-so exclusive Club Colette, where she is a member and on another night, Palm Beach celeb Kim Renk invited Leslie's guests to her family's palatial estate to enjoy cocktails. They tied the knot on Oct. 9 in a small private ceremony (she wore a magnificent gown by Elda de la Rosa) on the banks of the Big Sable river in NW Michigan where their cabin once stood. Murph said he "became emotional when she said those three little words, 'It's about time!" He added, "They didn't want to rush into anything."...LOL!  The perfect pair are now Mr. & Mrs.!

I, for one, won't be sad to see 2021 in my rear-view mirror. I feel like we're living in a whole new world now, and not necessarily a better one. The headline says it all, here's hoping for a bigger, brighter year for us all! Almost everyone I know has been sick, either with a bad cold or Covid. I miss our dogs and Chuck and I were both sick during Christmas so we didn't get a chance to really celebrate like we wanted to. This means our tree and decor will be staying up a LOT longer this year! I hope my neighbors across the street are fans of the holidays! I also felt like

I know the paper is taking up a lot of my time now so my schedule has definitely changed but I just feel like this year has been a blur. I'm hoping to make (and keep) some New Year resolutions: Don't sweat the small stuff (and believe me, everything is "small stuff" unless it's your loved ones' health); Make yourself your number one priority (if you're not in a good place, nothing else will be either); Carve out time to read more (for fun); When the weather is nicer, make sure to get out and enjoy nature. I used to be an avid bird watcher. Dearest blog readers, This month, Candid Candace celebrates 13 years of delivering the best that Chicago has to offer. Thank you for supporting me since 2008! I feel the best is yet to come for all of us. Even though the past year has been one hot mess, I see great change on the horizon. For friends who have asked if they should consider leaving town, I say no, give it another chance. Even though crime is off the charts, I think we can at least celebrate being together again, planning weddings, seeing family and friends and smothering them with hugs and kisses. Since most of us are vaccinated, we can truly celebrate summer in the city with a sense of freedom that is palpable after our 15 months of hibernation, which already seems like a thing of the past. You can feel it in every corner of the city as people stretch their wings to fly again. Here's to soaring to great new heights together, FINALLY, and also to a very memorable, fun-filled fall.

The Service Club of Chicago hosted its annual Day on the Terrace fashion show/fundraiser Monday, August 2 at The Geraghty (2520 S. Hoyne). The event, this year themed "Here Comes the Sun," is always a labor of love that culminates after a long year of planning. The committee is always so supportive as is the Service Club's vibrant Auxiliary Board who planned a first-time after-party for this year's event (more on this later). I reconnected with Bunnies I hadn't seen in nearly 50 years. I had worked first at the St. Louis Playboy Club in 1973 with friends that included Marsha Callender, Patti McGuire Connors, Janis Schmitt, Rhetta Penninger and so many more. I saw a few of these St. Louis Bunnies here in Chicago. From my Chicago Playboy Club days, there was a better representation that included Judi Kalata Altiere, Angie Chester, Cindy Fossen Russell, Nancy Perry, Susan Stone, Candy Hockenberry, Eddie Cook, Anna D'Agata, Cheryl Carioscia, Rita......and others. The first of these events was a meet-and-greet which took place at the Knickerbocker Hotel. As you may or may not know, this was the location of the second Playboy Club following the original one at 116 E. Walton. Its final incarnation in Chicago was in Lincoln Park (in the old Four

None of us are getting any younger and I really loved remembering everyone the way they were, darling faces and figures in a variety of colorful, iconic Bunny costumes but my curiosity got the better of me and off I went. THANK GOODNESS! I felt like I'd gone home again. Yes, we were all a little older but I could still see those cute faces and dazzling personalities that got them hired at the Clubs in the first place and I was back in the "hutch" with my friends again. Organizer Diana Peterson did a great job, even offering Playboy memorabilia for sale, many items she had created herself, like pillows with the girls' Bunny photos, sparkling rhinestone Bunny necklaces, cuff-links, costume cuffs,

were the sorority I never had and, as an only child, also the sisters I never had. The final event of the weekend took place in the elegant Gold Coast Room at the Drake and boy oh boy, it was so expertly planned right down to the magnificent floral arrangements on the tables to the giant black Playboy bunny logo statue that served as the focal point of the cocktail reception. An amazing array of rare Playboy memorabilia was on display in a silent auction with the live auction featuring two original Bunny costumes. Even Christie Hefner attended and delivered such a heartfelt speech. (Watch it here). The ladies danced and mingled throughout the magical evening. Thanks, as always Hef, for giving me a forever family. And thanks to you Diana Peterson for making it all possible!

I've been involved with this amazing organization for the last 20 years and have watched them grow and Grow and GROW until they are now one of the highest rated nonprofits on Charity Navigator. Since PAWS' founding in 1997, Chicago has seen a 91% decrease in the number of homeless pets killed and, last year, PAWS found forever homes for over 4,000 dogs and cats. Kudos to all who support this great rescue and to its founders, Paula and her daughter Alexis.

The Chicago International Film Festival, North America's longest running, juried film fest, will present "Lights, Camera, CHICAGO" on Monday, September 13 at Bridge 410, an event space at 410 N. Paulina. The themed event will feature tastings from some of the city's most iconic restaurants and vendors (ELI'S CHEESECAKE!) and include live music, a silent auction, films, food trucks and more. Teresa worked in the restaurant until she was 90 years old. Now Joe has help from his sisters and daughters who will help him continue to carry on his family's traditions. In 2008, Tufano’s received the American Classics Award from the James Beard Foundation. The restaurant is still nestled in the heart of little Italy in Chicago. "Fishing at the Jetty" program on the Riverwalk.

Who knew you could fish off the Riverwalk? Chicago Park District's FREE "Fishing at the Jetty" program provides fishing opportunities, weekly afternoon fishing clinics and interactive activities for everyone! Fishing rods, bait and all the supplies needed for a big catch are provided. Never tried fishing before? The Jetty is the perfect place to give it a try and especially a great place to make memories with the kiddies! The Chicago Park District will “hook” you up with guided instruction, tips and more. Matt Renfree, senior program specialist, says, "Nearly everybody catches fish. Most days, we are at 80 or 90 fish. The first weekend we had 484 people out.” The program, on the west end of “The Jetty: Floating Gardens,” part of the Riverwalk between Wells and Franklin streets, runs Thursdays and Fridays from noon-6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, now through August 15 and again from August 21 to September 25. The program teaches fish and fishing on the Chicago River and includes species such as bluegill and gobies, sunfish, crappie, large and small mouth bass, common carp and channel catfish. Fish are released, except for gobies, which are put in clear plastic bins to become a teaching tool about invasive species. So far, the rarest fish captured has been an American eel. The River North Design District will host its 6th annual RNDD Fall Gallery Walk, presented by Daniel Kinkade Fine Art, on Friday, Sept. 10. For this special event, the RNDD will create pairings with Chicago's top interior designers, international artists, galleries and design showrooms to create amazing backdrops for one of the most anticipated parties of the year. The walking tour will include 20 stops in the River North neighborhood with hot opening and closing parties! The galleries will keep the vignettes on display until October 11. Jim Flint celebrated his 80th BD at Park West surrounded by friends and family.

Lounge (4713 N. Broadway), celebrated his 80th birthday at Park West on July 27. The room was packed with friends, fans and well-wishers who all came together to honor this legend in the LGBTQ+ community (and beyond). The evening, produced as always by the talented Harrison McEldowney, included tribute performances by Maya Douglas, Tommie Ross, Dana Douglas, Angel Saez, Claire Chystalle, Stasha Sanchez, and so many more. The event closed with a performance by Dina Jacobs. Jim was teary-eyed throughout the night and mingled with every guest during the course of the evening. Seen at the event, among a crowd of about 200, was Howard and Bunnie Frum, longtime friends and supporters.
