I'm pretty sure that most, if not all of the events I'm going to keep posting about might be cancelled, but that won't keep me from spreading awareness about them. So please bear with me, you just might find a new org you hadn't heard of before and then be able to support it when the new event date is set. During this awful time, if you have the means, please consider supporting whichever nonprofits touch your heart. They, along with all of our wonderful arts organizations and cultural institutions, need our help now more than ever. Also, for our restaurant community, please consider carry-out, curb service or delivery, if offered. Hopefully soon, the news cycle will look a little different but, until then, I hope everyone stays safe and follows the guidelines (that seem to change hourly) Fingers crossed and prayers up......

Michelle Alegria--Fox 32 Chicago.

Two of my favorite media stars, Michelle Alegria and Brittney Payton (of Fox 32 Chicago) are trying to raise funds and awareness for a cause close to their hearts.

They were set to host an event on March 25 at the BOSS Store at the Shops at North Bridge but, as we all know, all social gatherings have been halted. The event was intended to raise funds to build a youth center for children coping with grief after losing a loved one. Sadly, both ladies have experience with this type of grief. Brittney, as you know, lost her father Walter Payton when she was very young and Michelle's 3 children recently lost their dad. Michelle said, "There are not enough services dealing with grief other than the therapist that the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute has on board. We want to change that, " she said. (The center will be a part of the Institute). Please watch for a new date and I hope you can all join us then!

The event will include a unique roaming feast with teaching artists from the School entertaining guests as they make their way along Lincoln Avenue. Geoffrey Mac, Project Runway winner Season18!

CONGRATS GEOFFREY! School of the Art Institute of Chicago alumnus Geoffrey Mac was named the winner of "Project Runway" Season 18 in the recent episode, two decades after graduating! Mac beat out three other finalists with a 10-look collection inspired by his father’s military service that featured over-sized puffy coats and futuristic evening wear. His prize includes $250,000 from Bluprint; $50,000 from Pilot; a feature in Elle magazine; and a mentorship with the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Mac told the Tribune (read story here) that he is trying to figure out what’s next, but he is leaning toward creating a unisex collection that can be worn in any season and is slated to launch a fragrance called “G” around April 1 (“The coronavirus can’t stop that,” he said).

Screenwriter Sylvia L. Jones!

Congrats to Chicago screenwriter and native Sylvia L. Jones! For two decades, Sylvia spent her days and nights covering local Chicago news as a television journalist. Now, this graduate of Providence St. Mel School finds herself making news thanks to her work as a writer in the entertainment industry. In April, she will add Lifetime Television to her long list of credits as she wrote the script for the highly anticipated biopic "The Clark Sisters: The First Ladies of Gospel" executive produced by QUEEN LATIFAH, MISSY ELLIOTT and MARY J. Thanks to the Chicago Tribune for running my article titled "A letter of support to my friends in the nonprofit community." Read it here and here: I feel your pain. I've watched with dismay as one after another of the events I planned on covering in my Chicago Tribune "Candid Candace" column was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. At first I was angry that they would succumb to this panic but, as more and more organizations, governments, countries and even Broadway cancel events, close their borders, restrict air travel, limit gatherings and close down the Great White Way, I have to admit the obvious....that my way of thinking, to soldier on, could be tempting fate. I applaud businesses who have the courage to keep their doors open in the face of all of this though. Many have sent sensible messages letting their clients know they are taking extra sanitary precautions and checking their workers more closely and encouraging both to stay home if feeling sick in accordance with recent guidelines. In my opinion, this is a common sense response. I believe it's a time for preparation, not panic. Here's a thought. Many of these nonprofits and arts organizations have had to cancel their biggest fundraisers for the year. I just wish I'd stocked up on necessities sooner. Chuck always said I was a hoarder but definitely not in the areas of food or drink, sadly. Luckily, as much as I love my social life, I've also always been a bit of a homebody. I want this thing to end and I hope there's not more loss of life. I feel like I'm in a bad horror movie, like "Outbreak," that's now coming true! I love the way the Italians are handling isolation, singing on their balconies to let their neighbors know they're in it together. Here's praying it doesn't come to that here though....I have a horrible voice.

During our time there, we drove into Miami Beach for dinner at Mr. Chow (2201 Collins) which was delicious but, in my opinion, needed a dress code. The spot was so elegant but seeing guests in baseball caps and shorts took something away from the experience. Sadly, our visit ended on a note of tragedy, when a car carrying two residents on one of the ferries went into the water on Tuesday, February 18. They perished. The next day when we left, we were directed to the very same spot those poor souls had been on. You can bet we had every brake on in the car with the windows down. I would've been wearing a full scuba suit too if I'd had one. Treasure every moment, you never know when your time will come, and create as many memories as you can. We're trying.

If you're a geek about dinosaurs like me, then you won't want to miss Jurassic Quest, the largest, most realistic exhibition of these prehistoric creatures in North America. The exhibit comes to Navy Pier March 6-8 and will feature 100, true to life-sized dinosaur replicas from the very small, to the gigantic, to those found under the

Megalodon!

sea. Jurassic Quest worked in collaboration with leading paleontologists to ensure each dinosaur was painstakingly replicated in every detail. Guests will have the chance to learn all things paleontology at the excavation station, where they can dig up fossils and by visiting the dinosaur museum to see real dinosaur fossils dating back over 60 million years, including bones that originated in North America. There will be countless activities throughout the event that suit all ages, including a host of dinosaur themed rides, baby dinosaur shows, walking dinosaur shows, dinosaur themed bounce houses, science stations and a dino cinema! The Chicago Artists Coalition will celebrate 45 years at its annual benefit, "Work in Progress," on Thursday, April 2 at the Knoll Showroom at 811 W. Fulton Market. I'm so excited about the upcoming Glitz & Glamour fashion show benefiting A Silver Lining Foundation which will be held at the Peninsula on March 4. Sadly, for those without tickets, the event is a sellout, but watch for blog coverage following....it will be an EPIC event to help provide free breast health testing and support for those in need. The Women's Board and the Board of Trustees of the Chicago Zoological Society will host "Rain Forests of the Whirl," to support the Brookfield Zoo on Saturday, April 25. Hot on the fashion scene, a new model is challenging the norms of beauty. Sophia Hadjipanteli, 22, was born and raised in Cyprus and is responsible for leading the charge in the "unibrow movement." She says she lets her jet black unibrow grow freely out of a sense of pride for her culture. Now ya know.....Yes? No? Maybe?

I think I can see an end in sight for our Chicago winter....there seems to be more sunnier days and the birds around our apartment are becoming more active--all positive signs. HOWEVER, until the weather truly warms up (for longer than a day or two), THE CHRISTMAS TREE STAYS!
