The We Dream in Color Foundation hosted it's annual Humanitarian Celebration at the DuSable Museum of African American History on Saturday, July 15. The evening included a Red Carpet meet-and-greet and a
reception before the program began in the auditorium theatre. The purpose of the evening was summed up in founder Quinton d' Alexander's comments. "Tonight, we celebrate individuals throughout our community who give deeply and freely from their hearts to encourage and enrich the lives of others, people I've seen who have turned all stones to ensure effective and positive outcomes for those less fortunate. Then I took a second
look only to realize that the same individuals who were doing the enriching and uplifting needed a touch of the same. I then
began to take a look at all of the people in my life who have touched my heart in one way or another only to see the struggles and pains of life they were going through too and decided I had to do something to take some of that pain away, if only for a minute." He dedicated the evening to the memory of his parents, William Gordy and Yvonne Nunn-Henry. I was honored to co-host this inspiring event with actress/singer Cynda Williams.
During the evening, a variety of live entertainment thrilled the crowd. Performers included Calvin Judah Bridges (singer/musician/songwriter);
Victoria Brady (who performed a stirring gospel tribute) and dynamic singers Tony Grant and Johnny G. A performance by darling, talented students from Premier One Dance Academy brought the house down as did a Whitney
Houston tribute by look-a-like artist Sherie Yvette Withers-Banks, who was also a presenter. Honorees this evening included two dear friends, photographer/artist Mila Samokhina, who was presented with the Eunice W. Johnson Visionary Award and WBBM-TV's Suzanne
LeMignot, who received the Michelle Obama Humanitarian of the Year Award. Other honorees included entertainer/inspirational speaker Trisha Mann-Grant (Ruby Dee Excellence in the Performing Arts); Director of Health Education and Community Outreach at the Puerto Rican
Cultural Center Maritxa Vidal (Rosa Parks Equality Award) and Dr. Peter Boateng, among others. A sensational fashion presentation set to the "La Vie en Rose" soundtrack featured
designs by d'Alexander and child bow-tie fashion designer Maverick Mecheau. The evening was a wonderful success honoring those in the community who are making a positive impact. Congrats to Quinton and all the honorees! (More Images)
This year, Taste of Chicago had the highest attendance rate since 2012 when the food fest moved to a five-day format! Over 1.6 million people enjoyed more than 200 menu items from 66 food restaurants and food trucks in Grant Park! By the numbers--Gold Coast Dogs sold over 90,000
hotdogs and 10,000 Maxwell Street Polish sausages! O'Brien's Restaurant and Bar sold 28,000 ears of corn; Lou Malnati's sold 20,000 slices of pizza; Miller's Pub sold 15,000 turkey legs; Pork & Mindy's sold 10,000 pieces of pig candy (bacon); Billy Goat Tavern & Grill sold 13,000
cheeseborgers and BJ's Market & Bakery sold 6000 lbs. of mustard-fried catfish (heavenly) and 9500 servings of peach cobbler (my will power held on this one). You get the picture, the event was wildly successful for both vendors and attendees with Saturday alone seeing the strongest sales since 2009 with over $1.9 million being spent! Of all the entertainment, food and fun though, our favorite was the fabulous birthday
celebration hosted by Eli's Cheesecake Company on Saturday. The event has become an annual tradition for both Eli's and Taste of Chicago, which both launched in 1980. (Eli's is the only vendor that can boast perfect attendance throughout the 37 years!) On this beautiful summer day, Maureen and Marc Schulman and their family pulled out all stops! A live performance by Cirque du Soleil (inspired by the upcoming
Chicago performances of "LUZIA: A Waking Dream of Mexico" that opens July 21) thrilled the crowd that snaked around Buckingham Fountain in anticipation of THE CAKE! The 1500-lb cheesecake (this year chocolate chip and cream cheese) took a week to prepare and included more than 700 lbs. of cream cheese, 200 lbs. of sugar and 60 lbs. of chocolate chips, to name just a few of the delicious ingredients! (Eli's has sold over 5
million slices of cheesecake at Taste over the past 36 years!) And to top it all off, Julianna Zobrist, the beautiful wife of Cubs second baseman and outfielder Ben Zobrist, led the crowd in a round of Happy Birthday! ALL the food at Taste was tempting but Eli's had us at "cheesecake." Congrats to all the vendors, the City of Chicago, Sam Toia (president/CEO of the Illinois Restaurant Association), Mark Kelly (DCASE Commissioner) and Mayor Emanuel for yet
another great experience for Chicago! We can't wait for next year!
It's a parent's worst nightmare--imagine you give birth to a happy, healthy baby only to find out a year or two later that he/she is diagnosed with a rare disease for which there's no cure (yet!) Well, this is exactly what happened to Hollywood producer Gordon Gray and his wife Kristen when they
discovered both their daughters had developed Batten Disease, an incurable, rare neurodegenerative disorder that leaves children blind, immobile and cognitively impaired.
Introduced by close friend Hayes MacArthur, the parents shared their heartbreaking story at the East Lake Shore Drive home of Shelley and Bill Farley on June 28. A crowd of family and friends listened as Gordon and Kristen spoke about the Charlotte & Gwenyth Gray Foundation established in their daughters' names to
raise funds for research to combat this deadly disease. With a never-give-up attitude, the parents overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles to finally reach a point where their daughters are seeing positive results from an experimental clinical gene
therapy trial. The trial was initiated, coordinated and funded solely by the foundation and has resulted in an FDA-approved first-of-its-kind investigational gene therapy clinical trial for children with Batten-CLN6. Six patients
have already received treatment and enrollment for additional patients is ongoing. Recently, Charlotte surprised her parents by singing a line from her favorite movie "Frozen." Thanks and god bless to these trailblazing parents for a love that

Bulgari, the iconic Roman high jeweler and master of colored gemstones, announced the re-opening of its boutique on Michigan Avenue on June 29 following an elegant reno in the
2,250 square-foot boutique by renowned designer Peter Marino. On July18, to celebrate this new design and also the 21-year relationship between Bulgari and Chicago, the brand's handsome president/CEO Daniel Paltridge hosted an elegant dinner at Nico Osteria. The private event featured a Dom Perignon
Champagne reception before 48 guests were seated at one long candlelit table dotted with beautiful black and white floral arrangements by Christine Noelle Design. The four-course dinner started with stuffed pappardelle consisting of milk braised pork,
carrots and black truffles followed by a choice of pan-seared wild striped bass or grilled flat iron steak. The boutique opened in May 1996 and, happily, Chuck and I were invited
to a private dinner in the store then to celebrate. It was an intimate, elegant affair then just as it was on this night. Seen on the scene for the celebration party were Bulgari's charming store
manager Raymond Western, Kimberly Burt, Greg Hyder, Jim Smith, Lynne Bredfeldt, Julie Novack, Naomi Sosman, Donna and Michael Socol, Lyna Lengevych, Whitley Herbert, Dr. Stephen Szczerba, Toni and Rick Canada, Matt Pettinelli and Mikhael Bortz among others.
And now, it's time for a little rant, if you will allow me. Lately, I've been googling "beauty tips for women over 50" just to see if I've been missing anything. Amusingly and
frustratingly, what I've come to realize is that a LOT of these articles seem to be written by "bloggers" who haven't even REACHED the age of 50! What the hell!? Today I read a column filled with all sorts of ridiculous "beauty tips" and the top of my head almost blew off. One
of the lists boldly stated "Do not wear eyeshadow if you're over 50"; "Don't wear bright colored lipstick"; "Don't wear your hair below your shoulders" and so much more! Omg, it was laughable. These women don't even know how to deal with skin on women my age. My face cries out for cosmetics, eye shadow and any other external help I can provide it with. And, at this point in your life, let me
remind you that this is your time to shine! You know yourself inside and out so make a bold statement! Wear your hair shockingly short or any damn way you please. If you want to draw a lipline like Betty Boop, I say just do it! The rules are that there ARE NO RULES! My favorite octogenarian style icon, Iris Apfel, wisely said, "When you don't dress like everyone else, you don't have to think like everyone else." And even though there are NO rules, here's a few I follow for my own style. I
feel much better now. Thank you.

Celebrating a decade of providing essential support for Chicago area community college students, One Million Degrees (OMD) raised a record $775,000 at its 10th Annual Food & Wine Tasting on June 2nd. Co-chaired by Deb Gross, Caroline Grossinger, and Rose Lizarraga, the benefit attracted nearly 600 people, who set the stage for helping 1,000 high-potential community college scholars across Chicago by 2018 succeed in school, work, and life. OMD is the only organization in Illinois exclusively
focused on helping community college students excel academically, complete their degrees, and launch their careers. From serving just over 100 students three years ago, OMD supported 700 Scholars this academic year with tutoring and mentoring, networking and professional development opportunities, and a stipend at all seven Chicago Community Colleges and three suburban colleges. “We have changed the lives of thousands of people across the region – from every neighborhood and suburb, every race and ethnicity, every age, every religion, and every single point along
the socio-economic spectrum,” OMD CEO Paige Ponder told the benefit attendees at Morgan Manufacturing. “We are dedicated to providing pathways to new opportunities for community college students.”
As OMD grows to serve 1,000 students, Ponder thanked OMD founders - David Scherer, Rose Lizarraga, Michael Golden, Michael Episcope, Thania Panopoulos, and Connie Mixon – “for starting something beautiful and for never walking away from it. You have changed thousands of lives, including
my own. You are having the ripple effect that you foresaw – ripples that will grow, over time, to reach One Million Degrees of impact.” She called the founders to the stage for a toast and a rousing cheer. Evening’s highlights included inspiring speeches by four OMD alumni Scholars: Selena Torres, a 2016 graduate of Truman College;
Shaina Henderson, a 2013 graduate of Harold Washington College and of the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2016; Joyce Campbell-Smith, a 2017 graduate of Daley College and Michael Angelo Quiroz, a 2016 graduate of the College of Lake County. The event capped off an extraordinary year for OMD. The organization
received the Philanthropy Award from the Make It Better Foundation and the Chicago Innovation Award. In April, One Million Degrees formally announced a partnership with global financial services company Aon to support a novel new apprenticeship program for students at City Colleges of Chicago.
Chicago Woman Magazine's founder/publisher Kendra Chaplin is a woman's woman. I knew that from the moment I met her and, with every issue of this relatively new
magazine (the first print edition came out in September 2015), my initial instincts have been confirmed. With this latest issue, she along with Fierce 50 Revolution founder Catherine Grace O'Connell (read her profile in
Nena's Notes blog here), and editor-in-chief Jennifer Smith Tapp, have combined forces to choose 50 Chicago women who represent their ideals of "change-makers, visionaries and entrepreneurs." In the foreward to the article, O'Connell writes, "There is a generation of women who are relishing midlife with a deep desire to share the wisdom from their
collective life experiences. They continue to be creators in remarkable careers, or embrace the opportunity to reinvent themselves in their passion. These are the women that The Fierce 50 Revolution and Chicago Woman Magazine
recognizes for their example and inspiration. Whether they are local or international leaders, these women are from all walks of life and are leaving a distinctive mark on the world, while paving new paths for the women that follow behind. They are visionaries, change makers, and entrepreneurs and they have never been more relevant.

Steak 48 opened on Friday, July 14, and it's already on my list of favorites! We went to a soft opening recently that benefited the Joffrey Ballet and we loved every, single, delicious moment of this elegant, cozy dining experience located at 615 N. Wabash. Jeffrey and Mike Mastro and their father Dennis Mastro, the founders and creators of the celebrated restaurant brands, Mastro’s Steakhouse and Mastro's Ocean Club, alongside
partner Scott Troilo, brought their newest concept, Steak 48, to the River North neighborhood last weekend. Oliver Badgio, who serves as Chief Brand Officer and has been with the Mastro family since the early
'90s, is involved as well. The 12,000-square-foot, two-story restaurant houses a unique and stylish collection of intimate spaces designed by Judith Testani of Scottsdale-based Testani Design Troupe. Every nook and cranny is filled with tempting eye-candy, be it through the decor or food choices. From the moment we entered, we knew this would become a regular haunt of ours. Chuck even commented about how nice it will be to dine there while watching a beautiful
snowfall from the windows. And any restaurant that offers lavender-infused hot towels to diners, not once but twice throughout the meal, has my undying loyalty. We ordered a rib-eye and tuna poke for entrees with an exciting selection of starters and sides. The fried deviled eggs were a taste sensation as was the
dramatic Beignet Tree we ordered for dessert. And even though the restaurant offers a classic steakhouse menu, there are so many other dishes by Chefs Marc Lupino and Brian Key to tempt you like Shetland Island salmon, prime steakhouse meatloaf, Chef's PB&J (paté, fig jam and Woodford Reserve bourbon), Alaskan king crab and rock shrimp mac & cheese and on and on and on! Highlights include an 800-square-foot patio (with breathtaking views
of Medinah Temple) where a second beautiful bar is located, a floor-to ceiling glass expo kitchen, intimate dining kitchen suites and multiple dining rooms featuring gorgeous architectural details. The wine program includes 50 wines-by-the-glass and over 150 by-the-bottle! Steak 48 is part of Arizona’s distinguished restaurant group, Prime Steak Concepts, which also owns and operates a trio of successful signature fine dining steakhouses,
including Dominick’s Steakhouse and Steak 44 in Phoenix and Steak 48 in Houston. During several nights of soft openings, the restaurant was turned over to fundraisers for Blessings in a Backpack (hosted by Chicago Bear all-pro Kyle Long on Sunday night); YWCA Metropolitan Chicago (hosted by CEO Dorri McWhorter and Kathleen Henson on Tuesday night); Lurie Children's Foundation (co-hosted by the Medical Center Board, member Manuel "Manny" Sanchez
and the Children's Service Board on Wednesday night) and Ronald McDonald Charities on Thursday night hosted by Henson (whose PR firm is the agency of choice for the restaurant). I highly recommend this elegant, yet cozy dining spot and was happy to see so many familiar faces who work there now, like Charlie Gitto! I also love their philanthropic efforts on behalf of the Chicago community. Food, fundraising, elegance and ambiance--all watchwords for this cool new player in the city's restaurant scene.
The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago, one of the largest nonprofits in the Midwest, held its 100th Anniversary Century of Hope Civic Dinner at the Chicago Hilton with a crowd of over 750. Monsignor Michael Boland, president/CEO of Catholic Charities, hosted the
dinner with co-chairs Mr. and Mrs. Richard Burke Sr. and Mr. and Mrs. Al Moschner. Guests enjoyed a cocktail reception, dinner, a U.S. Marines salute and music by Roderick Dixon. In addition, guests were the first Chicagoans to witness the unveiling of the 100th anniversary video. The benefit raised more than $800,000 to help fight
homelessness; provide emergency food and support services; children and family services; maternity and adoption support; programs for veterans and seniors and domestic shelter programs. "One million people count on the support of Catholic Charities each year,” said Monsignor Boland. “We give those that come to us
much more than a bag of food, a hot meal, or a bed for the night—although those things are vitally important. We give them hope. We show them that they are cared for and that their lives matter. We restore their dignity and help them find a new path.” Since 1917, Catholic Charities has
supported all who turn to the nonprofit for assistance through services touching a broad spectrum of human needs, bringing help and
healing to those who need it most. Today, every 30 seconds someone turns to Catholic Charities for help at one of its 150 locations located in the most vulnerable and underserved communities in Cook and Lake counties. From April 2017 – April 2018 Catholic Charities will celebrate the 100th anniversary milestone with a variety of special events. Rolls-Royce, Perillo BMW and the Apparel Industry Board, Inc.(AIBI) hosted the annual REV UP CHICAGO, a non-profit event benefiting young fashion designers and entrepreneurs in the Chicagoland area. This fashion-focused event, held on June 2, honored Mira Horoszowski, an
advisory board member of AIBI who has been a Chicago business icon for 47 years. A fashion show produced by Susan Glick, first vice president, AIBI executive board,
highlighted Mira Couture, Horoszowski’s bridal line. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in Gold Coast hosted
unveiled its newest luxury Rolls-Royce convertible called “Dawn Inspired by Fashion." Julie Mersine and Yvette Klobuchar served as co-chairs for the event. AIBI was founded in 1987 by the late Mayor Harold Washington and is a delegate agency of the City of Chicago Department of Planning and Development. Its mission is to nurture and grow the fashion, apparel and sewn products industries in the Chicagoland area. To accomplish this, AIBI offers a wide range of programs aimed to develop the skills of students, entrepreneurs and young designers such as mentoring opportunities, workshops, and business
seminars.
Gilda’s Club Chicago, a cancer support organization that provides free psycho-social support to the Chicagoland community, hosted its 10th annual Gildapalooza at the Columbia Yacht Club on July 13. Held on Chicago’s beautiful
lakefront, the event was hosted by ABC-7 sports anchor Dionne Miller and included food,
drinks, prizes and entertainment by Chicago musicians Molehill and Town Band. The event raised approximately $40,000 for Gilda’s Club, an organization providing free support for men, women and children affected by cancer along with their families and friends. It
offers 300 free programs per month to provide support, education, healthy lifestyle programs, resource referrals and social opportunities. Nineteen years ago, Gilda’s Club Chicago opened
their Red Door on Wells Street, offering a welcoming environment of care and support to Chicago. Over the years, Gilda’s Club has grown far beyond its Clubhouse in downtown Chicago to locations in schools, businesses and hospitals across the community.
Join hosts Maureen and Marc Schulman when they co-chair an event for The Happiness Club, an organization near and dear to their hearts, that allows a diverse group of Chicago kids the

Chef Giuseppe Tentori has done it again! He threw a great party for "industry night" at his GT Fish & Oyster that was a tribute to Maine lobsters and the men and women who fish for them! Serving stations offered guests the opportunity to sample different types of lobster (hard shell and new shell) and all the dishes you can imagine that they can be included in--like delicious
lobster rolls! Chuck and I met 3rd generation lobster fishermen who filled us in on the details of their hard work. Lobsters can only be taken if they're a certain size--too small, they go back; too large, they go
back; females with eggs, they go back, and on and on. I loved hearing the "lobster lowdown" from the fishermen and sustainability expert Barton Seaver. We also (certainly) loved tasting the fruits of their labors! Congrats, with love, Giuseppe!
I know this event happened a while ago, April 29, but it's just too important not to share! I don't know how it slipped through my lil' blogging fingers! I love the Brookfield Zoo, especially Rich Gamble who serves as Senior VP of Operations there. Its annual black-tie gala, WHIRL, is one of our
favorites, mostly because they bring out their ANIMALS for a delightful and informative meet-and-greet! During the cocktail reception, more than 620 guests had opportunities to meet many of the Zoo’s
animal ambassadors, as well as animals from Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The animals included a tamandua (a small anteater), a prehensile-tailed porcupine, a Major Mitchell’s cockatoo, a two-toed sloth, a serval, a Cape porcupine, a wallaby, a wood duck, a great horned owl, a red-tailed hawk, a serval, a black-footed penguin, a fennec fox and a cheetah! In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the Grand Tent was exquisitely adorned in white and silver décor with stunning centerpieces created by Kehoe Designs. Food for Thought catered the evening’s three-course dinner and, afterwards, guests enjoyed dancing to the music of Maggie Speaks. Congrats to all on yet another memorable evening! It was a night fueled by endorphins, love and positivity at The Geraghty (2520 S Hoyne Ave) June 1, when the venue teamed up with Barry’s Bootcamp for the first-ever LOVE YOURSELF | FITNESS + NETWORKING Event. Orchids anchored to
kettlebells as centerpieces, and balance balls in gilded stands as accent chairs were just some of the touches Kehoe Designs enlisted to transform the venue into a most stylish fitness facility. Some 250 attendees got to mix and mingle while savoring healthy fare from Paramount Events, Wellness Grub and Eat Purely. Handcrafted Palomas by Agave Loco
and Kona Deep water were on hand to quench participant’s thirst. An experiential fitness fair was brought to life by IVme Wellness + Performance, Advanced Cryotherapy & Fitness, Just In Time Fitness, Team Fireball, LISA and Kara Danielle. Some guests chose to have their hair braided by Goldplaited, while others shopped the offerings of stylish retailers soundoff and mercer & winnie. The evening culminated with a
comprehensive, full body workout led by a quartet of chiseled trainers from Barry’s Bootcamp. The DJ Firm provided the high-energy soundtrack for the evening, while Kehoe Designs’ tech team ensured everyone looked good working out in the space that glowed in hot, multi-colored hues. Fab Photo set up a GIF photo booth to capture guests’ enthusiasm in dynamic, 360 degree fashion, and Windy City Limousine provided transportation to and
from the event. Congrats to all on one perfect work-out environment!
Congrats are in order for longtime partners Gregg Zgonena and Shaun Mosalik! They met in 1997 and have had 20 years of bliss! Recently, they tied the knot at the Arts Club before 150 friends and family. Love and congrats to this handsome pair! As Kup always said, "Long may they love!"

I know the world is divided between those who are Game of Thrones fans and the few who aren't. We are firmly
entrenched in the pro-GOT camp and were perched on our sofa with goosebumps following the season premiere of this massive franchise following books written by George R. R. Martin. According to this terrific article by Tribune columnist John Kass, the Wall that figures
prominently in the series was inspired by the huge blizzard of '67 that Martin experienced in Chicago where all he could see were "walls of ice." So there ya go! WINTER IS HERE!

On July 21, Chuck and I celebrated 28 years of marriage. Here's my reflections (and a video clip) on these wonderful years with a bit of advice thrown in for good measure. :-)
