The Joffrey Ballet's Spring Gala welcomed over 700 supporters who gathered for a festive evening of world-class dance and fundraising hosted by its Women’s Board on April 21. The black-tie evening began at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University with an intimate performance by dancers from the Joffrey Company and the Joffrey Academy of Dance who performed Progression, Non e Normal e, Opus, Round of Angels and Liturgy. After
the performance, guests were whisked by trolley to The Palmer House Hilton where they enjoyed a reception in the opulent Red Lacquer room. Dinner followed in the Grand Ballroom where Community Engagement dancers, who are taught by
Joffrey instructors, delivered a powerful performance for the crowd. The gala was co-chaired by Sandy and Roger Deromedi, Shelley and Bill Farley, Jerrilyn and David Hoffmann,
Maria and Bill Smithburg and Women’s Board President, Patti Eylar. Notable guests in attendance included Mary Galvin, a longtime
supporter of the Joffrey Ballet and the evening’s honoree, as well as Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Anne Kaplan, Frances and Chris Renk, Andrea Schwartz, Shauna and Barry Montgomery, Ellie Forman, Kathleen Henson, Brian Johnson,
Sondra and Tony Karman, Noren and Rich Ungaretti, Virginia and Norm Bobins, Melinda Jakovich and Lucien Lagrange, Greg Thompson, Dr. Lauren Streicher and Jason Brett, Caryn and King Harris, Melissa and Brian
Babcock, Karen Gray and John Krehbiel, Ann and David O'Neill and Jazelle and D.L. Morriss. The evening concluded with an after-party, led by
Community Engagement dancers, back in the Red Lacquer Room with dessert and dancing. This
signature event raised $1.6 million for The Joffrey’s operation and programming, including the various community programs, providing students of all ages the opportunity to foster creativity and confidence through the art of dance. (Photos by Dan Rest)
On Sunday, April 23, one of the most popular men in town was honored by the Catering Executives Club of America at the LondonHouse. Over 300 guests, a sellout crowd, packed the ballroom to honor Greg Hyder, a 16-year veteran of the
Peninsula Chicago, with its Achievement Award. The invite and event decor was as elegant as the man himself who has been featured as a "man-of-style" and "one to watch" by CS Magazine, Michigan Avenue Magazine, Chicago Magazine, Today's Chicago Woman
mag, Splash and Genre Magazine. Two performance artists greeted guests and offered silk pocket square snippets in honor of Greg's sartorial style. Electric violinists performed in bright pink wigs during cocktail hour as attendees mixed, mingled and enjoyed breathtaking views up and down the Chicago
River. When the doors opened to the ballroom, there was a collective gasp from the crowd over the elegant decor by Kehoe Designs. John Rudy, CEC president and VP Food for Thought, welcomed guests and explained the organization's mission--to educate, inspire and foster leadership through education, networking and inspiration at monthly meetings and special fundraising events. The Club strives to give back to the
community on a regular basis through scholarships for aspiring future professionals as well as charitable contributions for those in need. This year's scholarship recipients are Erik Friend, Leslie Burch and Kenzie Mocogni. During the program, friends spoke about Greg's impact in their lives. Longtime friend Jean Antoniou read a touching speech from Greg's boss, Maria Zec, who couldn't attend due to a death in the family. I was honored to speak as well and shared Greg's many
awards and accolades. A video presentation took the audience down memory lane as photos of Greg's full life played out against a soundtrack of "September" by Earth, Wind & Fire. A very funny "roast-style" video directed by James Gustin and edited by Nick Sanchez featured comments from his friends Quenten Schumacher, Tom Kehoe ("some days Greg wears pattern on pattern on pattern. The reality is
that Greg has really bad taste and, if it wasn't for me to help him, it would be terrible"), Laura Schwartz, Graham Elliott, Brooke Ricketts, Tracey Tarantino, Craig Hogan, Jean Antoniou, Diane Hollingsworth, partner Jim Smith ("when he says he's had one martini, he's actually had three"), Michael Caputo (the Peninsula Chicago has a heart and
it's Greg Hyder") and Sheryl Dyer among others. Greg was introduced to the Cubs' soundtrack, "Go Cubs Go," but the lyrics were changed to "Go Greg Go" and the audience wouldn't stop singing it as he took the stage. He said, "This is so humbling...I wouldn't be up here if I didn't have an amazing property to express myself through." He thanked friends who had flown in, his co-workers and the organization for their support. A great honor for a wonderful guy! Congrats Greg!
Even though the Rolling Stones were only there in spirit, the opening night party held at Navy Pier for Exhibitionism, a tribute to all things Stones related, was a total immersion into the well-lived life of this iconic rock group on April 19. Nine galleries (over 18,000 square-feet) are filled with 550 artifacts from the Stones' personal archives and include memorabilia, guitars, costumes, photos, unseen
videos, an interactive recording studio and so much more. The invite-only event included a kick-off party featuring renowned bluesman Billy Branch and his band the Son of the Blues (see performance here). The band serenaded the crowd as they
munched on hors d'oeuvres, enjoyed cocktails, took silly pics on the step-and-repeat and shared memories of the heady days of rock n' roll. Later in the evening, Branch invited legendary bluesmen in attendance, Sam Lay and Corky Siegel, to join him onstage. The entrance to the exhibit is a 9 foot-high, glowing red sign with
"Ladies and Gentlemen" in big block letters. Beyond that, was a world of pure imagination--vintage pics of a grinning, gap-toothed Mick Jagger; a huge tongue that changed colors and serves as the group's logo (it first appeared on the album insert sleeve and then on the actual record label of their 1971 album “Sticky Fingers“); a tiny diary hand-penned by Keith
Richards; fabulous artwork by pop icon Andy Warhol and more, much more. In the "costume" room, a touching sign stated that a feathered marabou coat was designed for Jagger by his then girlfriend L'Wren Scott who committed suicide in 2014. Besides this artifact, everything else celebrated the band's 50-year rise to the top in joyous fashion. Of all the wonderful experiences in this exhibit, my
favorite was the 3D concert. Guests were given glasses and then ushered into a small, dark (black) room with a giant screen. Instantly, you were transported to the front row of the Stones' 50th Anniversary "Satisfaction" concert. It was such a total immersion that one woman broke out in a joyous dance. Notables on the scene
included Sam Lay (Rock & Roll and Blues Hall of Famer); Corky Siegel (a renowned blues harmonica master and Chicago Blues Hall of Famer); Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater (Chicago blues master musician, Grammy nominee and Blues Hall of Famer); Jim Peterik (founder of
band Survivor and Grammy Award-winning songwriter); Deputy Mayor Steve Koch; JAM Productions' Jerry Mickelson and wife Dr. Stacie McClane; Pam Sage; Jamie Ceaser (Ceaser Salad Productions); Tony Abruscato; Felicia Dechter (Skyline) Margie Korshak; Marilynn Gardner and Michelle Boone
(Navy Pier) and so many more. (Exhibitionism runs through July 30) AND, besides this exhibit, there is more programming on the Pier to give fans a little bit of the Stones experience for FREE! On Saturday nights, the Aon Fireworks will go off to a Rolling Stones soundtrack beginning May 27 through August 26! Chicago photographer Paul Natkin, the official photographer for several Stones and Keith
Richards' tours, has a FREE photography installation in the interior of the Pier featuring iconic and intimate images of the Stones (in a corridor leading to Exhibitionism, between Doors 9 and 10). There are also several cool VIP packages available (group tours, dinner/bar packages) to give you a special "rock star" experience! Check out the website here for all the details/offerings. Since becoming a nonprofit organization in 2011, Navy Pier is quickly transforming into one of Chicago's most dynamic cultural destinations. Pure Satisfaction! Rock on!
News from the West coast! Patrons and supporters of The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles arrived at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA on April 29 to honor artist Jeff Koons at its 38th annual star-studded gala—raising over $3 million to benefit the
museum's exhibition program and growing collection. The evening began at The Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in Downtown Los Angeles' Little Tokyo. Guests were invited to walk a festive purple carpet, leading to an outdoor cocktail reception set beneath the Frank Gehry-designed canopy. Guests enjoyed the exhibition, a variety of hors d'oeuvres by
Wolfgang Puck and Ruinart Rosé Champagne. After cocktails, gala guests proceeded into the brilliantly lit, magenta-hued gala tent. The décor took inspiration from Koons's vibrant color palette, and was anchored by a Mylar-balloon backdrop executed with hundreds of oversized
balloons in Koons' iconic magenta tone. As part of its nod to the series, the gala showcased Balloon Dog (Orange), Balloon Dog (Magenta), and Balloon
Dog (Yellow), a series of limited edition plates by Koons, produced in France by the legendary French porcelain maker Bernardaud. After dinner, ten-time Grammy and 2015 Oscar-winner John Legend and his band took the stage and kept the crowd on its feet for a thirty-minute set, playing hits such as "Green Light," and concluding with an emotional rendition of his recent hit "Love Me Now." Partygoers were especially
surprised when performer Miguel took to the stage for a duet performance of "Overload" also from Legend's newest album, Darkness and Light. Guests then filed onto the
cocktail-area dance floor, which had been transformed into a nightclub under the stars complete with atmospheric lights and fog, and entertainment by DJ M.O.S. The gala drew over 600 international guests from
the worlds of art, design, architecture, fashion, film, and music. In attendance were gala co-chairs and board co-chairs Lilly Tartikoff Karatz and Maurice Marciano, honoree Jeff Koons, along with MOCA Director Philippe Vergne and his wife Sylvia Chivaratanond, and MOCA Chief Curator Helen Molesworth. Also in attendance
were performers John Legend and Miguel, and DJ M.O.S., joined by important guests from the worlds of art, design, entertainment, music and fashion, including Patricia Arquette, Pierce Brosnan and Keely Shaye Smith, Paris Hilton and Chris Zylka, Ricky Martin and Jwan Yosef, Sean Penn, Ryan Seacrest (new co-host with Kelly Ripa!) and Shayna Taylor, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Tilly, and Alex Van Halen; artists Doug Aitken,

The Midwest Regional Office of UNICEF USA hosted its 10th annual UNICEF Hope Gala at The Geraghty in Chicago on April 29, raising funds to support UNICEF’s work to put children first around the world.
UNICEF’s 70th anniversary of lifesaving work in 190 countries and territories inspired the gala’s theme. Over the course of the evening, guests enjoyed a silent auction and raffle, seated dinner, live auction by auctioneer Jeff Brown and entertainment from Ken Arlen Evolution Orchestra. I've had a lot of questions about our 4" figurine that we bought in NYC so this is how you can create your own. The resin figurine was created by a process called doob, which is a photo-realistic 3D printing replica process where you can have yourself, loved ones, pets, -- whoever you want to have--doob-licated to eerie
perfection. There are three steps to doob-lication that usually takes around an hour. First, you have to physically visit a store to be
photographed and measured. You can't just send photos in. A cylindrical photo "booth" captures your images through high-speed scanning from 54 cameras. You then review the
photos to make sure you're happy with your pose, etc. Proprietary software converts the images into high res 3D files that are then 3D printed at one of their production centers. The doob 3D printed replica is typically delivered in 2-3 weeks. (See my surprise when
our figurine arrived here!) The doob-urines comes in six sizes: 4", 6", 8", 10", 12" and 14." Prices begin at around $95 for a single figure. For ours, with Chuck, the dog and a pedestal, it cost around $300. They offer a variety of options that can drive the price up but it's worth it. There are stores in L.A. and San Francisco with two locations in NYC! See complete process in video below and happy "doob-licating"! (For more info, click here).
Knock! Knock! Who's there? PLAYBOY! I was contacted by Playboy to reprise my February 1979 cover! Here's part of the email: "Hugh Hefner created the Playmate with the idea that, “Once a Playmate, always a Playmate.” We wanted to celebrate the rich and seductive history by looking back at some of our most iconic covers and cover models, and we decided
it might be time to revisit them and recreate them, reminding readers that, once a Playmate, always a Playmate. We would love to invite you to participate and work with us to recreate your February 1979 cover, with full hair, make- up, and prop styling." The shoot will be in Chicago
on May 9. I'm only eating raisins. Wish me luck!
Special thanks to Ravinia's Nick Pullia and WCIU "You & Me" executive producer Rob Morhaim! They invited me to host an upcoming
segment on the show about gala fashion and, in particular, what to wear for the Ravinia Festival Gala on Saturday, July 29. I interviewed WB members/co-chairs Judy Castellini and Andee Rein and Linda Piepho (GM Neiman Marcus Northbrook).
Watch for the segment the week of July 24th! So much fun!
And on another TV note, thanks to Decades TV Network for including me in their interesting segment about the glory days of the
iconic dance club Studio 54! The segment aired on April 26 and featured comments by Lorna Luft, Nikki Haskell, Ian Schrager, Anthony Haden-Guest and more! Schrager's description of the club's opening is priceless. (See video here!)
Kudos to one of my favorite designers, Tom Kehoe! He was just named one of the top 40 event designers in North America by Biz Bash Magazine! So deserving!

think of a better charitable partner for the Spring 2017 season than the Holiday Heroes Foundation,” said Midwest Fashion Week Director, Berny Martin.

an exceptional education to deserving Chicago students while also offering a safe, 24/7 environment. Jeff wrote, directed and stars in the mystery movie "Handsome" which was released on Netflix on May 5th. He offered the audience a sneak peek of the film with all proceeds from the night benefiting the Academy. For more information about RBA, click here. You're a good man Jeff Garlin!

As always, so many exciting events happening around town! Pick a charity close to your heart and support it--it doesn't have to be monetarily either, although I know they would appreciate it, but your time means a lot too! Volunteers are the glue of every organization and can make or break a non-profit.
Thanks, as always, for reading my blog. Since 2009, it's been a little beacon for charities, new events, exciting film premieres and so much more! I appreciate the support!
Love,
Candace
P.S. And, of course, something to make you smile---"I'll have a Chihuahua on whole wheat please." Rooney Rules!
